From Sanskrit प्रधान (pradhāna, leading; presiding; etc); possibly via Old Khmer pradhāna, pradāna, prathṭhāna, braḥ dhāna, braḥ dhāṇa, braḥ thāna (chief, lord, master, leader; man of distinction, personage of note; supreme, most important; etc). Cognate with Modern Khmer ប្រធាន (prɑthiən).
