Oracle bone script: Pictogram (象形) – a person () with dots above and below the arms, depicting will o' the wisp around a corpse.

In the bronze script, feet () were added to the bottom. In the small seal script, is detached from the corpse, which corrupts into the unrelated ; Shuowen erroneously interprets it as an ideogrammic compound (會意) :  (fire; flame) +  (feet).
