From Middle Chinese 羯磨 (MC kɨɐt̚ muɑ), itself a transliteration of Sanskrit कर्मन् (karman, literally “act, action”).
This pronunciation is prevalent in many Japanese schools of Buddhism, Tendai and Jōdo-shū to name a few.[1]
