First attested in the Hunmin jeongeum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446 as Middle Korean 별 (byēol), from Old Korean 星利 (*bjә-ri). [1] Compare dialectal forms 비얼 (bieol), 밸 (bael), 베리 (beri), 빌 (bil), etc.
