Etymology 1

Uncertain. Has been linked to both Ancient Greek Ο (O, β€œomikron”) and Ξ© (Ō, β€œomega”), as well as Runic α›Ÿ (/o/ or /ō/). SnΓ¦dal (2015; see references) favours the first derivation, interpreting it as being (like the letter 𐌿 (u, β€œurus”)) an adapted allograph of Greek omikron.
