Asia
English

The continent of Asia, by the standard definition delimited by the Urals.

Asia (the Roman province)
Etymology
From Ancient Greek Ἀσῐ́ᾱ (Asíā), from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀯𐀹𐀊 (a-si-wi-ja /aswijaː/), in turn probably from Hittite 𒀸𒋗𒉿 (Aššuwa, “northwest Anatolia”) of uncertain origin, but possibly from either:
- Akkadian 𒀀𒋗 (“to go out, to rise”), a reference to the rising sun, hence “land of the sunrise.”
- a proposed Aegean language family word "asis", meaning "muddy" or "silty", in reference to the silty eastern shores of the Aegean sea.
