From Old Portuguese despreçar, des- + preçar, from preciar (“to price, to hold dear”), from Latin pretium (“price”), from Proto-Indo-European *preti- (“back”); or possibly through a Vulgar Latin *dispretiāre. Compare English depreciate, also Spanish despreciar, Italian disprezzare.
