From Old Portuguese ousar, from Vulgar Latin *ausāre, a frequentative derived from Latin ausus, perfect active participle of audeō, from Proto-Italic *awidēō (to be greedy, want very much). Compare Spanish osar, Catalan gosar, Occitan ausar, French oser, Italian osare.
