Etymology
From Proto-Baltic *rey-tey, *rey-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *rey- “to shout, to bellow, to bark.” The original diphthong ey is still seen in the present tense forms (reju, etc.). Cognates include Lithuanian ríeti “to bark; to scold,” Old Prussian rīgewings ([rījewinɡs]) “quarreling,” Russian dialectal раять (rájatʹ) “to make noise,” Old High German rērēn, Middle High German rēren “to bleat, to bellow, to shout,” German röhren, Sanskrit रायति (rāyati) “to bark,” Ossetian рӕйын (ræjyn), рӕйун (ræjun), Kurdish reyîn “to bark.”[1]
