From Proto-Germanic *twai, whence also Old English twā (English two), Old Frisian twā, Old Saxon twā, twō, Dutch twee, German zwei, Gothic 𐍄𐍅𐌰𐌹 (twai). Compare also Old English twēġen (English twain), Old Saxon twēne, Old High German zwēne (German zween). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dwó, whence also Latin duo, Ancient Greek δύο (dúo).
