This wikiHow teaches you how to prevent anyone from going to Yahoo.com in any web browser on your computer, phone, or tablet. The most straightforward way to truly block the website is to do so by editing a special file on your computer called the "hosts" file. If you're blocking the site for a child, you can use the parental controls built in to your iPhone, iPad, Android, or Chromebook. If you just want to prevent yourself from viewing the site, consider using a browser plugin like BlckSite
Steps
Blocking for All Computer Users (Windows)
-
1Press ⊞ Win+S. This opens the Windows Search bar.
-
2Type notepad into the search. Don't press anything afterwards—just type the word into the box.Advertisement
-
3Right-click Notepad in the search results. A menu will expand.
-
4Click Run as administrator. If prompted by your security settings, click Yes to continue.
-
5Click the File menu and select Open. This opens the file browser.
-
6Navigate to the folder that contains your hosts file. The folder is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. To get there, do the following steps:
- Double-click the C: drive (unless Windows is installed on a different drive). If you don't see it, click This PC first.
- Double-click the System32 folder.
- Double-click the drivers folder.
- Double-click the etc folder.

- Click the Security tab.
- Click the Edit button.
- Check the "Allow" box next to Full Control.
- Click OK and then Yes.
- Click OK to close the window.
-
9Select the hosts file and click Open. The file is now open for editing.

10Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the first empty line. You'll need to type something on the first empty line, so make sure you're below the existing entries.
-
11Type the following into the file.
- On the first empty line, type 127.0.0.1, press the Tab key, and then type www.yahoo.com
- Press the Enter key to go to the next line.

- If you want to block Yahoo Mail as well, press Enter to go to the next line, type 127.0.0.1, press Tab, and then type mail.yahoo.com.
-
12Click the File menu and select Save. This saves your changes to the hosts file.
-
13Restart your PC. After editing the hosts file, click the Start menu, click the Power menu, and select the option to Restart. When your PC comes back up, nobody will be able to access Yahoo on the web using any web browser.
Blocking for All Computer Users (macOS)

1Open the Terminal app on your Mac. You can do this by typing terminal into the Spotlight search bar and selecting Terminal from the search results. You can also open Terminal by double-clicking its icon in Finder under Applications > Utilities.
- This method will prevent you (and anyone else who uses your Mac) from accessing Yahoo from all browser and other apps.[1]
-
2Type sudo nano /etc/hosts and press ⏎ Return. You will be prompted to enter your password.
-
3Enter your password and press ⏎ Return. Now that you've confirmed your password, a special file called a Hosts file will open in a text editor called Nano.
-
4Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the first empty line. You'll need to type something on the first empty line, so make sure you're below the existing entries.
-
5Type the following into the file.
- On the first empty line, type 127.0.0.1, press the Tab key, and then type www.yahoo.com
- Press the Return key to go to the next line.

-
8Type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and press ⏎ Return. This refreshes your network settings so Yahoo will be blocked immediately.

- Tap Continue.
- Tap This is My Child's iPhone.
- Tap Not Now twice.
- Tap Continue.
- Enter and confirm a new passcode. This will be used to edit your screen time settings, including settings for content filtering.

6Tap Web Content. It's near the middle of the menu.

-
8Add Yahoo to the list of "Never Allow" websites. As soon as you add a site to this list, anyone who tries to view it in a web browser on this iPhone or iPad will see a "Restricted" error. To bypass the restriction, they'll need to enter the Screen Time PIN. To add Yahoo to the list:
- Tap Add Website under "Never Allow."
- Type www.yahoo.com and tap done.
- Repeat those steps for yahoo.com and mail.yahoo.com (if you want to block Yahoo mail too).

9Tap the back button to return to Content & Privacy Restrictions. Now that you've blocked the website, you can either stop here, or continue if you want to prevent your child (or other person) from downloading any Yahoo-related apps from the App Store.
- Keep in mind that the child will not be able to download any apps, not just Yahoo.
-
10Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases. It's near the top.
-
11Select Always Require. This ensures that the person using the phone or tablet will not be able to install apps unless they have your Screen Time password.
Blocking with Parental Controls (Android or Chromebook)
-
1Open the Family Link app on your Android or Chromebook. If you manage a child's account and don't want them visiting Yahoo or any Yahoo-affiliated sites (such as Yahoo Mail), you can block the site in the Family Link app.
- The Family Link app has a blue, green, and yellow shield icon and you'll find it in your app list.
- If you don't have the Family Link app on your Android or Chromebook, you can get it from the Play Store, or just go to https://g.co/YourFamily and sign in.
-
2Select the account you want to block Yahoo for. This opens that account's settings.[2]
-
3Tap Manage settings on the Settings card. More settings will expand.
-
4Tap Filters on Google Chrome.
-
5Tap Manage Sites.
-
6Tap Blocked. If any sites are already blocked, they will appear here.
-
7Tap Add an exception. Now you'll be able to enter the address of the site you want to block.
-
8Add any Yahoo URLs you want to block. If you just want to block the main Yahoo website, enter www.yahoo.com and yahoo.com. If you also want to block Yahoo Mail, enter mail.yahoo.com as well.
-
9Tap the X after you're done making changes. The changes will take effect immediately.
- Since you're blocking the website in user's Google account, it will affect their browsing anywhere they sign in.
