Calling Spain from the United States is now easier than ever before. Thanks to modern technology, you have multiple options to make an international call for an affordable rate, or even for free. Regardless of whether you are using a landline, cell phone, or an application, there are a few basic steps you need to do in order to make a call to Spain from the US.
Steps
Dialing a Landline or a Cell Phone
-
1Check the basic rates before making a call to Spain. Before you place a call to Spain, you need to know what basic rates your phone company will charge for an international call. Basic rates are the rates charged by phone companies to customers who make an international call without enrolling in a calling plan that includes international calls. Basic rates can range anywhere from $1 a minute to nearly $7 a minute.[1]
- Cell phones can also incur additional charges for international calls.
Tip: If you plan to make regular calls to Spain, you may want to consider enrolling in a calling plan that includes free or discounted rates for international calls.
-
2Dial 011 to place a call outside of the US. To make an international call from a home phone or a landline, you have to first dial the exit code. For the US, the code is 011. You will not be able to place your call to Spain without first inputting the exit code.[2]
- For a cell phone, you have to dial the “+” symbol first.
- If you have a US cell phone, you don’t need to dial an exit code to call another US number, no matter where you are.

3Press 34, the country calling code for Spain. The country code primes your call for phone numbers that only work in Spain. If you enter the wrong code, your call will not go through, or you could place a call to the wrong country.[3]
- If you enter the wrong country calling code, you must start the process over. Hang up and start with the exit code and then enter the correct country code.
-
4Enter the area code for the phone number. Spanish phone numbers begin with a 2 or 3 digit area code that corresponds with a specific region in Spain. Some regions may have more than one possible area code. All cell phone numbers will begin with either a 6 or a 7 after the country code.[4]
- If you don’t know the area code, you search online for the area code of the region the person you are calling is in.
- Internet phones or VoIP numbers start with an 8 as the area code.
-
5Input the phone number. After you’ve dialed the exit code to place a call outside of the US, pressed 34 to connect with a phone in Spain, and dialed the area code, you can input the rest of the phone number to have your call connected. Spanish phone numbers have 8 numbers following the area code and appear in groups of 3.[5] So a phone call to someone in Barcelona could look like this:
- 011 34 831 234 567. "011" is the exit code, "34" is the country code for Spain, "83" is the area code for Barcelona, and the rest are the specific phone number you are calling.
Calling with a Prepaid Calling Card
-
1Select a calling card that can be used to place calls to Spain. Calling cards are available for purchase at large chain stores like Target and Walmart, as well as electronics stores like Best Buy. There are a variety of prepaid calling cards, but you need to be sure that the one you choose can be used to make calls to Spain. Some calling cards are intended to be used for specific types of calls or calls to specific regions.[6]
- A calling card allows you to make international calls for a much cheaper rate than the basic rates offered by phone companies. The card holds a balance that is used to pay for each international call.
-
2Review the rates and the terms and conditions of the calling cards. That way, you'll know you're getting the best rate for your needs. Check the per-minute rate for making calls to Spain. Check to see if there is an expiration date, and if there is one, decide if you will use the card before it expires before you buy it.[7]
- The cheapest options are not always the best ones!
-
3Find the PIN number on the card. After you’ve purchased a prepaid calling card, you’ll need to activate it to use it. In order to activate it, you need to locate the PIN number because you will be prompted to provide it. Many calling cards have the PIN number covered beneath a silver coating on the back of the card. Scratch off the coating to see the number.[8]
- Some calling cards list the PIN on the receipt after you purchase it.
- There are online calling cards you can use that may give you a PIN or ask you to create one. Don’t forget or lose your PIN number or you won’t be able to use the calling card.
-
4Call the access number listed on the card. You won't be able to use the card until you do. The access number is generally listed on the back of the card and is usually an 800 number. Dial the number and enter your PIN number when it asks for it.[9]
- If you enter the wrong PIN, hang up and dial the access number again or it may lock your card.
-
5Dial the exit code, country code, area code, and the phone number. After you’ve called the access number and entered your PIN, you can dial the phone number you are trying to reach. Start with the US exit code (011), the country code for Spain (34), and the area code followed by the phone number. Wait a few moments to have your call connected.[10]
- There may be a brief pause or a message stating that call is being connected.
-
6Keep a record of the time you spend on a call. To monitor how much time you have left on your calling card, you need to keep track of the minutes you spend on each call. You can keep a pen and paper to note the time you start a call and the time you end a call. Your phone may also have a digital screen that will tell you how long you’ve been on a call, so you can keep record of that time.[11]
Tip: Some calling cards allow you to check your remaining balance as well as add additional funds over the phone or online using a debit or credit card. Check the packaging or the back of the card for a service number or a website.
Using the Internet
-
1Call Spain with an app on a smartphone connected to the internet. There are several applications that you can download to your smartphone to call a number in Spain. Google Voice, WhatsApp, and Skype are a few popular options. Some apps may have a fee to download them, but once you have them, you can place calls for free as long as you are connected to the internet. Download a calling app from your phone’s app store.[12]
- Some applications will only allow you to call other people who also have the app and not to a landline or cell phone.
- If you are using an app to call a cell phone or landline in Spain, you will need to dial the US exit code (011) and the country calling code for Spain (34) before you dial the area code and phone number.
Tip: Facebook and other social media platforms allow you to call someone by using your profile to place a call to another person’s profile.
-
2Make a video call to Spain. Many video chat services allow you to make free calls to any number in Spain that also has the ability to video chat. Most smartphones have built-in features that allow users to make video calls if they are connected to the internet. If you are on a computer, you can use a webcam and a video calling service like Skype or Zoom to make video calls over the internet.[13]
- For video call apps or programs like FaceTime and Skype, you do not need to enter an exit code, but you do need to enter the country code for Spain (34) before dialing the number.
-
3Place a phone call to Spain using VoIP services. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is used by many phone services to make international calls. Phone companies like Vonage and Lingo use the internet to connect calls, and provide services that allow you to place calls in Spain much more cheaply than traditional phone companies. Because these services use the internet to make phone calls, you can call from a traditional phone, a smart phone, as well as a computer.[14]
- You will need a special VoIP adapter to use the service on a landline.
