Feta cheese is a really tasty addition to a variety of dishes. While it’s really well-known for being crumbled over food, you can purchase it in block form. Since feta is softer than most other cheeses, you can slice blocks of feta in smaller cubes or crumble it into pieces. Play around with smaller chunks of this soft cheese to jazz up your recipes!

Slicing a Block of Feta

1Freeze a block of feta cheese for 10-15 minutes. Keep your block of feta in its original packaging and transfer it to your freezer. Set a timer for at least 10 minutes so your cheese has time to harden a little bit. [1]
- Feta cheese is really soft, and has a tendency to crumble really easily. Freezing your cheese makes it a lot firmer, which makes it a lot easier to slice.

2Slice the cheese into 1⁄2 in (1.3 cm) cubes. Place the cheese on a cutting board or another clean, sturdy surface. Cut the feta into bite-sized chunks with a knife, making sure that they’re around 1⁄2 in (1.3 cm) wide. For ease of eating, don’t make these chunks any larger than 3⁄4 in (1.9 cm) wide.[2]

3Refrigerate the cheese in a salty brine for 1-2 months. Fill an airtight, food-safe container with 2 c (470 mL) of water. Stir in 2 tsp (11.4 g) of salt, then add your sliced feta cheese into the mixture. Seal the container carefully and label it with the day’s date. Try to enjoy your cheese within about 1-2 months, or else it may start to go bad.[3]

Crumbling the Cheese

1Place a block of feta cheese in the bottom of a clean plastic bag. Open up a large plastic bag that’s big enough to hold a block of feta cheese. You don’t have to seal it— just make sure that the cheese is at the bottom of the bag.[5]
- Any kind of plastic bag will work for this, as long as it’s resealable.

2Squeeze the outside of the bag to crumble your feta cheese. Grip the plastic bag around the feta and squeeze the chunk to break it into smaller pieces. Repeat this process along all edges of the cheese until it’s completely crumbled at the bottom of the bag.[6]

3Refrigerate the crumbled cheese in the bag if you plan on eating it soon. Push out any air that’s stuck in the bag so your cheese can stay as fresh as possible. As a precaution, write the current date on the bag so you can remember how fresh it is.[7]
