Background

Following the 2021 election, Republicans regained control of the House of Delegates that was lost to the Democrats in 2019. They currently hold a narrow majority of 52 seats.[2]

After the 2022 General Assembly session, House Democrats voted via a secret ballot to remove former speaker and then-minority leader Eileen Filler-Corn from the top of party leadership.[3] House Democrats would replace Filler-Corn with Don Scott as the new minority leader.[4]

The 2023 election will be the first election held under new district maps following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.[5] In 2020, voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to create an independent redistricting committee. This committee ultimately failed to agree on a newly drawn map.[6] The districts delegates will be running in were created by two special masters appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia.[7]
