Etymology
Perhaps transcription of a foreign term; compare Tibetan ལང་ཐང་རྩེ (lang thang rtse, “Hyoscyamus niger”).
In what is possibly a folk etymology, herbalist Li Shizhen explained the name as:
- 其子服之,令人狂狼放宕,故名。 [Classical Chinese, trad. and simp.][▼ expand/hide]
- From: The Compendium of Materia Medica [Bencao Gangmu], by Li Shizhen, 1578 CE
- Qí zǐ fú zhī, lìng rén kuángláng fàngdàng, gù míng. [Pinyin]
- Its seeds, when ingested, will make one deranged (kuanglang) and unrestrained (fangdang), hence the name.
