Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Of uncertain origin; but most likely a ro-extension of *bagati + *-rъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₃g-.
Alternatively, from *bʰagʷʰ- (“to dip, to soak”), with potential cognates in Ancient Greek βάφω (báphō, “to paint”) and Ancient Greek βάπτω (báptō, “to submerge”). The later, however, are normally derived from *gʷabʰ-.
It is possible that the particular meaning crimson/purple has been influenced by Oghuric Turkic *baɣur < Proto-Turkic *bakɨr (“copper”).
