From Old Turkic 𐱅𐰇𐰼𐰜 (t²ür²k̥ /türük/), from *𐱅𐰇𐰼𐰃 (*t²ür²i /türi/, “root, ancestry, race”) + suffix 𐰜- (k̥- /-ük/), from Proto-Turkic *türi- (“lineage, ancestry”). Also compare Chinese 突厥 (Tūjué, Tújué, “Turk”) and Chinese 鐵勒 (Tiělè, “Tiele people”), who may have been mistaken for Huns.
