Playing in the dark adds a fun element of tension, especially if you can play in a spooky location. Remember, a location that is usually busy and brightly light can be spooky in the dark - you don't have to play in an abandoned mansion, the ruins of a castle or a former reform school for wayward children!

Plan the game out if you're doing this at a party or gathering. Make sure everyone knows who goes first, second, and so on.

Make sure you have a full day to yourself. Take a notebook and a pencil and search the location for the game. Look for good hiding spots. If there's a really good spot, but it's full of clothes, cleaning supplies or linens, clear enough items to get yourself into the space. Make room for yourself to hide in as many really good spots as you can.

Sort out all of the hiding spots that you marked down. Take another piece of paper and on one side put "OK Hiding Spots" and on the other put "Really Good Hiding Spots" or whatever you want to, and go through the location again, making sure you didn't miss any spots. Make sure you look outside, around the building, in the backyard or grounds, in pit buildings etc.

Take a fairly big paper and draw the outline of the location you'll be planning hide'n'seek on it. Fill it in. Mark what's in it and what the room, e.g. lounge, common room, attic etc. Draw in beds, tables, dressers, etc. Now take a colored marker and mark the the best places to hide. Carry this with you. Fold it up and slip it into your pocket or up your shirt sleeve.

Make a list of places you could have a base. The bedroom. The living room. Kitchen. Family room...etc. Make a list of hiding spots near each possible base.

Don't hide with anyone unless you know they won't say where you are if they get caught. Consider taking a little cousin or any one who will follow you when you play. Send them out if you want see if it's safe - they will get caught, but you won't!

Be alert. See everything. Hear everything. Listen to everything.

Think ahead. Don't play in a boring way! Move to different hiding spots, but make sure no one is there to see or hear you. If you have a dog, you should keep it away. It will most likely follow you or stare at you, also a cat.

Put on some soft music, so if you make a little or big sound, more than likely, no one will hear.

Try not to repeat hiding spots unless the hiding spot you've been using hasn't been found yet. Use it to your advantage. You could hide out the whole game and win! But where's the fun in that?

Depending on where you're trying to move to, walk slowly, or try to walk without making a sound.

Try to make your moving spots easy to get in and out of.

In HnS in the dark, sound is your friend. If you can hear the seeker, they can probably hear you. Remain quiet and stick to an area. If you can remember the layout of the area BEFORE the lights go out, your chances of winning will be increased.

It's okay. Everybody gets found sometimes and has to be "it." Just do your best to find your friends and try to pick a better hiding spot next time.

Safety is the most important thing, so if you're playing in the dark make sure there are streetlights or something lighting the way for the seeker so they are not stumbling around in total darkness.
