Melons are a very useful crop in Minecraft.. They are easy to farm, and you can not only eat them but also use them to brew healing potions or trade with farmer villagers to get emeralds. However, melons and their seeds can be difficult to find. Melons naturally generate in certain village types, woodland mansions, and in rare jungle biomes, and their seeds can be found in dungeons and mineshafts, which are often dangerous. It is well worth the risk though for the many uses melon slices have.

Method 1
Method 1 of 6:

Exploring Abandoned Mineshafts

  1. 1
Explore caves, ravines, or badlands biomes. Mineshafts can generate in any Overworld biome underground, and are usually found by exploring ravines and caves[1] . Mineshafts can also generate above ground in badlands biomes.
    • Make sure you are well prepared, as mineshafts and caves can be dangerous if you're not on Peaceful mode. Bring plenty of torches, food, and pickaxes. Bring a weapon and armor too, as well as extra materials like wood, iron, and coal in case you need to craft more of something.
  2. 2
Explore until you see minecart rails, wood and fence posts, or torches that you didn’t place. You may also want to listen for an abundance of spider sounds, as they may signal a nearby cave spider spawner, which only generate in mineshafts.

  3. 3
Wander through the mineshaft until you find a minecart chest.
  4. 4
Loot the chest. Each chest will have different loot items in it, and there may not always be melon seeds in every chest. If there are melons seeds, take those and any other loot you want from it. If there are no melon seeds in a chest, take whatever loot you do want and look for another chest.

Method 2 of 6:

Finding Melons in Jungles

  1. 1
Find a jungle biome. Jungle biomes are somewhat rare, so you may have to explore for a while before finding one. Pick a direction and just start walking. They can be identified by their tall 2x2 block trees and the lush green color of the leaves and grass.
    • If you are having trouble finding a jungle and have cheats enabled on your world, you can use commands to find one. Open chat and type /locatebiome jungle then enter it. This should bring up the coordinates to the nearest jungle, which you can then teleport or walk to.
  2. 2
Look for melon blocks. Melons can naturally generate in jungle biomes and variants. Look around the jungle until you find a stripey green block with a stem on top.
  3. 3
Break the melon. Use an axe or your hand to break the melon block. It will drop 3-7 melon slices[2] .

Method 3 of 6:

Finding Melons in Villages

  1. 1
Find a Savanna or Desert village. These are the only village types that can generate with melons, however, melons are more common in savanna villages. Savanna villages are found in savannas, and desert villages are found in deserts[4] . Keep exploring your world until you find one of these villages.
  2. 2
Look for melons. Walk around the village and look for piles melons or melon stems on farmland.
  3. 3
Break the melon blocks or stems. Melon blocks can be broken using an axe or your bare hand, and they'll drop 3-7 melon slices. Melon stems can be broken with your bare hand and will drop 0-3 melon seeds.
    • The older the stem is, the more likely it is to drop seeds[5] .

Method 4 of 6:

Finding Melons in Woodland Mansions

  1. 1
Find a woodland mansion. Woodland mansions are one of the rarest structures in Minecraft. They spawn in dark oak forest biomes, usually thousands of blocks away from the spawn point[6] . The easiest way to find woodland mansions is by trading with a Cartographer villager for a woodland explorer map.
    • If you have cheats enabled on your world, you can use commands to find a woodland mansion. Open chat and type /locate mansion in chat and enter it. This will give you the coordinates of the nearest woodland mansion, which you can then teleport or walk to.
    • Woodland mansions are very dangerous. They contain many hostile mobs like pillagers, vindicators, vexes, and regular ones. Bring plenty of food, good armor and weapons, torches, and even healing or strength potions if you have them.
  2. 2
Locate a dual staged farm room. This is a farm room with 2 levels, the bottom has fully grown pumpkins and pumpkin stems, and the top has fully grown melons and melon stems[7] .
    • Not all woodland mansions are guaranteed to have this room. If the one you found does not contain melons, try to locate another one or use another method.
  3. 3
Break the melon blocks or stems. Melon blocks can be broken using an axe or your bare hand, and they'll drop 3-7 melon slices. Melon stems can be broken with your bare hand and will drop 0-3 melon seeds.
    • Since the stems that generate in woodland mansions are fully grown, they are more likely to drop 1 or 2 seeds rather than no seeds at all.

Method 5 of 6:

Looting Dungeons

  1. 1
Explore caves. Dungeons generate in the Overworld at any altitude and in any biome, as long as there is a cave nearby[8] .
  2. 2
Look for cobblestone you didn't place. Dungeons are made of cobblestone and mossy cobblestone, so if you find some you didn't place near a cave, it is probably a dungeon.
  3. 3
Place torches on and around the spawner. Placing torches on and nearby the monster spawner in the dungeon will prevent mobs from spawning. You could also break the spawner using a pickaxe, but this will completely destroy it.
  4. 4
Loot the chests. There are usually 1-2 chests in dungeons, and those chests have a chance to contain 2-4 melon seeds[9] .
    • Not every dungeon will have melon seeds in it, so if you don't find some the first try, look for another dungeon.

Method 6 of 6:

Growing Your Own

  1. 1
Craft a hoe. Open a crafting table and place a stick in the middle slot and the middle of the bottom row. Then, place 2 wooden planks next to each other in the top row.
  2. 2
Till dirt near water. Hold the hoe in your hand and right click some dirt that is within 4 blocks of water.
    • If you're playing on Pocket Edition, tap the dirt.
    • If you're playing on a console or with a controller, press the right trigger.
  3. 3
Make sure there is at least 1 empty space next to the tilled ground.
  4. 4
  5. 5
Wait for the stem to grow and produce a melon. You can use bonemeal to speed up the growth process.
  6. 6
Break the melon. Melon blocks can be broken using an axe or your bare hand, and they'll drop 3-7 melon slices.
