Plan your tournament. Plan out which game you're using (it could be 64, Melee, Brawl, Wii U/3DS, Ultimate, or even a fan hack such as Project M or Brawl Plus), the rules of the tournament, where the tournament will be held, the time and date of the tournament, the tournament's structure, and the prizes for winning.

Get the software you'll need for the tournament. At the very least, you'll need the console and game, controllers (you'll only need two to four at a time, though you may want more as backup in case a controller breaks), and a television.

Advertise your tournament. You can advertise it on social media, through fliers, or anything else. If you're using fliers, be sure that your flier looks attractive so that people will notice it. Be sure that you explain how to enter the tournament.

Get some food and drinks, if you'll be providing them. It's a good idea to provide food and drink so that people don't get hungry or thirsty. Plus, it may make people more likely to attend your tournament.

The day before your tournament starts, set up the software you'll be using. You want everything ready before the tournament starts.

Most of the instructions still apply, but you won't have to advertise if it's just you and your friends, you can probably just have a general agreement to show up at the time and place. Also, you probably won't have to set up quite as early as the day before, probably just an hour or two beforehand. Feel free to change whatever else you like, though. It's your tournament and you can do it however you like.

Warnings

Don't try to do everything alone. Have some friends or family members with you so that they can help you, whether it's to get the software or to get food and drinks. It'll also make the tournament more fun to hold.
