Banglar Mati Banglar Jol (Bengali: বাংলার মাটি বাংলার জল, pronounced [bˈɑŋɡlɚ mˈɑti bˈɑŋɡlɚ d͡ʒˈɑːl]; "The Soil of Bengal, The Water of Bengal") is a Bengali patriotic song written by Rabindranath Tagore and the official state anthem of West Bengal.[1][2]

Rabindranath Tagore, the author and composer of the national and state anthems of India and West Bengal

It was composed in 1905 in support of the "Bangabhanga Rodh Movement" in Bengal.[3][4][5][6] Tagore started "Raksha Bandhan Utsav" on 16 October 1905 to reunite Hindu and Muslim Bengalis protesting the Partition of Bengal (1905) and on that day, this song was the motto of the movement.[1][4][5][6] The notation of the song was given by Indira Debi Chowdhurani.[3]

On 7 September 2023, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed a resolution making Banglar Mati Banglar Jol the official state song of West Bengal.[7][8]
