From Old Portuguese anoitecer, from a- + noite + -ecer, or from a- + Latin noctēscere, present active infinitive of noctēscō (“I grow towards night, grow dark”), from nox, noctis (“night”). Compare Galician anoitecer, Spanish anochecer.
