Etymology
From Old Portuguese emprender, from Vulgar Latin *imprendere, from *imprehendere, present infinitive of *imprehendo, from Latin in + prehendō. The current form came from the older emprehender, modified in a learned manner from the popularly inherited, now obsolete, form emprender to more closely reflect the Latin etymon, as with compreender and comprender, repreender and reprender, etc.
