From เวท (wêet, “Veda; sacred knowledge; secret knowledge; etc”) +‎ มนตร์ (mon, “mantra”); ultimately from Sanskrit वेद (veda, “sacred knowledge; true knowledge; etc”) + मन्त्र (mantra, “mantra”), probably via Old Khmer veda (“Veda; sacred knowledge”) + mantra (“mantra”). Compare Modern Khmer វេទមន្ត (veet mŭən).

เวทมนตร์ • (wêet-mon)

1. charm, incantation, spell; magic, sorcery, witchcraft.
   • Acts 8:9, KJV:

     ยังมีชายคนหนึ่งชื่อซีโมนเคยทำเวทมนตร์ในเมืองนั้นมาก่อน และได้ทำให้ชาวสะมาเรียพิศวงหลงใหล เขายกตัวว่าเป็นผู้วิเศษ

     yang mii chaai kon nʉ̀ng chʉ̂ʉ sii-moon kəəi tam wêet-mon nai mʉʉang nán maa gɔ̀ɔn lɛ́ dâai tam-hâi chaao sà-maa-riia pít-sà-wǒng lǒng-lǎi kǎo yók dtuua wâa bpen pûu-wí-sèet

     But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

     kon táng-lǎai náp-tʉ̌ʉ kǎo prɔ́ kǎo dâai tam wêet-mon hâi kon táng-lǎai pít-sà-wǒng lǒng-lǎi maa naan lɛ́ɛo

     And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

     lɛ́ lǎai kon tîi chái wêet-mon dâai ao dtam-raa kɔ̌ɔng dton maa pǎo sǐia dtɔ̀ɔ nâa kon táng-bpuuang dtam-raa lào-nán kít bpen raa-kaa tʉ̌ng hâa mʉ̀ʉn rǐian-ngən

     Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

     jong dtâng-man yùu nai wêet-mon kɔ̌ɔng jâo lɛ́ wít-tá-yaa-kom bpen an mâak kɔ̌ɔng jâo sʉ̂ng jâo tam maa nàk nák-nǎa dtâng-dtɛ̀ɛ sǎao sǎao chá-rɔɔi man jà bpen bprà-yòot gɛ̀ɛ jâo dâai chá-rɔɔi jâo jà mii chai

     Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

     lɛ́ prá-ong dâai song tà-wǎai oo-rót kɔ̌ɔng prá-ong hâi lui-fai nai hùp-kǎo bùt-chaai kɔ̌ɔng hin-noom tʉ̌ʉ rə̂ək-yaam chái wêet-mon chái sǎi-yá-sàat dtìt-dtɔ̀ɔ gàp kon-song lɛ́ pɔ̂ɔ-mót-mɔ̌ɔ-pǐi prá-ong song grà-tam sìng tîi chûua-ráai bpen an mâak nai sǎai-prá-nêet kɔ̌ɔng prá-yee-hoo-waa sʉ̂ng bpen gaan-yûua-yú hâi prá-ong song grîu-gròot

     And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
