Etymology
Compound of 戸 (to, “door”) + 陰 (kage, “shadow”), as lizards are thought to be crawling on doors and their dark coloring can be mistaken for their shadow. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 蜥蜴.
