Etymology

From Arabic عَلَى (ʿalā, on, about) by haplology before the article ال (al-). The short form is still commonest before the article but eventually came to be used in all contexts.

Preposition

ع (ʿa)

  1. on; upon; onto
  2. about (a topic)
  3. to (a place)

    ʿami nsāfir ʿa bayrūt

Usage notes

  • In writing, the preposition is usually spelt as an isolated letter, as in the example above. However, it is commonly joined to the article, as in عالبيت (ʿa-l-bayt, to the house; home).
  • The personal forms are built from the stem ʿlay- or ʿalay- as in عليكن (ʿ[a]laykun, on you).
