Etymology

From Pali uparāja, from upa- (inferior; deputy; vice) + rāja (king); or from Sanskrit उपराज (uparāja), from उप- (upa-, inferior; deputy; vice) + राज (rāja, king); perhaps via Old Khmer ūpparāja (vice king); equivalent to Thai อุป (ùp) + ราช (râat). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឧបរាជ (ʾupaʾyuvĕəʾriəc); Burmese ဥပရာဇာ (u.pa.raja); Lao ອຸບປະຫຣາດ (’up pa rāt), ອຸປະລາດ (’u pa lāt).
