Alternative forms

  • (Standard Bosnian, Standard Croatian, Standard Serbian) níste
  • (Standard Montenegrin) nijèste
  • (historical, regional) nijéste

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *ne + *este, second-person plural present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesmъ in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něste (attested in the 14th century). Because of the yat reflex, něste became rendered as neste in Ekavian speeches.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /něːste/
  • Hyphenation: ne‧ste

Verb

néste (Cyrillic spelling не́сте)

  1. (regional, chiefly Serbia) negative second-person plural present of biti
