COVID-19 pandemic in Benin
The COVID-19 pandemic in Benin is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached Benin in March 2020.

Background
On 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that a novel coronavirus was the cause of a respiratory illness in a cluster of people in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, which was reported to the WHO on 31 December 2019.[2][3]
The case fatality ratio for COVID-19 has been much lower than SARS of 2003,[4][5] but the transmission has been significantly greater, with a significant total death toll.[6][4] Model-based simulations for Benin suggest that the 95% confidence interval for the time-varying reproduction number R t diminished to around 0.6 during the second half of 2021.[7]
Timeline
March 2020
- On 16 March, the first COVID-19 case in the country was confirmed in Porto-Novo, the capital of Benin.[8] Three days later, the second confirmed case was reported. The city has suspended various international flights and people coming into the country via air are being kept under 14 days' mandatory isolation. Moreover, people in Benin are advised to wear masks and go outside home only if required.[9]
- There were 9 confirmed cases and one recovery in March, leaving 8 active cases at the end of the month.[10]
April to June 2020
- In April there were 55 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 64. The first death from COVID-19 occurred on 5 April.[11] The number of recovered patients increased to 33, leaving 30 active cases at the end of the month.[12]
- There were 168 new cases in May, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 232. The death toll grew to 3. There were 110 recoveries during the month, raising the number of recovered patients to 143, leaving 86 active cases at the end of the month.[13]
- In June there were 967 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1199. The death toll rose to 21. There were 190 recoveries during the month, bringing the number of recovered patients to 333, leaving 845 active cases at the end of the month.[14]
July to September 2020
- There were 606 new cases in July, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1805. The death toll rose by 15 to 36. The number of recovered patients increased by 703 to 1036, leaving 733 active cases at the end of the month (a decrease by 13% from the end of June).[15]
- There were 340 new cases in August, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2145. The death toll rose by four to 40. By the end of the month the number of active cases had halved in relation to the end of July, to 367.[16]
- There were 212 new cases in September, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2357. The death toll rose to 41. The number of recovered patients increased to 1973, leaving 343 active cases at the end of the month.[17]
October to December 2020
- There were 286 new cases in October, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2643. The death toll remained unchanged. The number of recovered patients increased to 2418, leaving 184 active cases at the end of the month.[18]
- There were 372 new cases in November, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3015. The death toll rose to 43. The number of recovered patients increased to 2839, leaving 133 active cases at the end of the month.[19]
- There were 236 new cases in December, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 3251. The death toll rose to 44. The number of recovered patients increased to 3061, leaving 146 active cases at the end of the month.[20]
January to March 2021
- There were 642 new cases in January, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 3893. The death toll rose to 52. The number of recovered patients increased to 3421, leaving 420 active cases at the end of the month.[21]
- There were 1541 new cases in February, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 5434. The death toll rose to 70. The number of recovered patients increased to 4248, leaving 1116 active cases at the end of the month.[22]
- The national vaccination campaign began on 29 March, initially with 144,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine.[23] There were 1666 new cases in March, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 7100. The death toll rose to 90. The number of recovered patients increased to 6452, leaving 558 active cases at the end of the month.[24]
April to June 2021
- There were 721 new cases in April, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 7821. The death toll rose to 99. The number of recovered patients increased to 7580, leaving 142 active cases at the end of the month.[25]
- There were 237 new cases in May, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 8058. The death toll rose to 101. The number of recovered patients increased to 7893, leaving 64 active cases at the end of the month.[26]
- There were 141 new cases in June, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 8199. The death toll rose to 104. The number of recovered patients increased to 8000, leaving 95 active cases at the end of the month.[27]
July to September 2021
- There were 195 new cases in July, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 8394. The death toll rose to 108. The number of recovered patients increased to 8136, leaving 150 active cases at he end of the month.[28]
- There were 4972 new cases in August, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 13366. The death toll rose to 128. The number of recovered patients increased to 8854, leaving 4384 active cases at the end of the month.[29]
- There were 10524 new cases in September, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 23890. The death toll rose to 159. The number of recovered patients increased to 21993, leaving 1738 active cases at the end of the month.[30]
October to December 2021
- There were 859 new cases in October, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 24749. The death toll rose to 161. The number of recovered patients increased to 24346, leaving 242 active cases at the end of the month.[31]
- There were 114 new cases in November, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 24863. The death toll remained unchanged. The number of recovered patients increased to 24554, leaving 148 active cases at the end of the month.[32]
- There were 72 new cases in December, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 24935. The death toll remained unchanged. The number of recovered patients increased to 24736, leaving 38 active cases at the end of the month.[33] Modeling carried out by WHO’s Regional Office for Africa suggests that due to under-reporting, the true cumulative number of infections by the end of 2021 was around 5.4 million while the true number of COVID-19 deaths was around 1470.[34]
January to March 2022
- There were 1515 new cases in January, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 26450. The death toll rose to 163. The number of recovered patients increased to 25931, leaving 356 active cases at the end of the month.[35]
- There were 125 new cases in February, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 26575. The death toll remained unchanged. The number of recovered patients increased to 26353, leaving 59 active cases at the end of the month.[36]
- There were 377 new cases in March, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 26952. The death toll remained unchanged.
April to June 2022
- There were 264 new cases in June, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 27216. The death toll remained unchanged.[37]

COVID-19 vaccination in Benin is an ongoing immunization campaign against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in response to the ongoing pandemic in the country. As of 28 June 2021, Benin has administered 36,188 doses, 26,268 people with one dose and 9,920 people fully vaccinated.
