นาย

From Old Khmer nāy, nāya (“leader; leading man”); ultimately from Sanskrit नाय (nāya, “guide; leader”). Cognate Modern Khmer នាយ (niəy).

นาย • (naai)

1. chief; lord; master.
   • 2 Kings 6:5, KJV:

     ขณะที่คนหนึ่งฟันไม้อยู่ หัวขวานของเขาตกลงไปในน้ำ และเขาร้องขึ้นว่า "อนิจจา นายครับ ขวานนั้นผมขอยืมเขามา"

2. (historical) the lowest noble rank of Thailand; person holding such rank.
3. used as a title for or term of address to these people.
4. (law) a formal title which a man over 15 years of age is required to use.
5. similar title, as mister, monsignor, signor, etc.

• A man under 15 years of age is required to use the title เด็กชาย (dèk-chaai).
• A woman under 15 years of age is required to use the title เด็กหญิง (dèk-yǐng), and that over 15 years of age is required to use the title นางสาว (naang-sǎao). A married woman, irrespective of the age, is required to use either นางสาว (naang-sǎao) or นาง (naang).
