Borrowed from Pali māra (“evil one; tempter; death personified”). Compare Sanskrit मार (māra, “evil one; death; etc.”); Old Khmer māra, māra°, °māra (“Buddhist Satan; death”); Modern Khmer មារ (miə).

1. (Buddhism) māra, a type of evil gods that prevent accomplishment or success.
   • Tipiṭaka, Saṃyutta Nikāya, Sagātha-vagga:

     เย จ กาเยน วาจาย มนสา จ สุสํวุตา น เต มารวสานุคา น เต มารสฺส ปจฺจคูติ ชนเหล่าใดสำรวมดีแล้วด้วยกาย ด้วยวาจา และด้วยใจ ชนเหล่านั้นย่อมไม่ตกอยู่ในอำนาจของมาร ชนเหล่านั้นไม่เดินตามหลังมาร

     Ye ca kāyena vācāya manasā ca susaṃvutā na te māravasānugā na te mārassa paccagūti. He who conducts himself well, whether in relation to his body, to his speech, or to his mind, will not be subject to the authority of the māra, and will never walk behind the māra.

     Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

     (referring to someone who prevents a person from enjoying his food)

     (referring to an unwanted baby)
