From Sanskrit मन्त्री (mantrī, “adviser; counsellor; consultant; secretary”, literally “one with mantra; one reciting mantra; one versed in mantra”); perhaps via Old Khmer mantrī (“king's counsellor or minister”). Cognate with Modern Khmer មន្ត្រី (mŭəntrəy). Compare Pali mantī.
