Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *somHós, from the root *sem-, which also gave εἷς (heîs, one). Cognate with Old English sama (English same), Sanskrit सम (sama), Old Persian 𐏃𐎶 (hama), Old Church Slavonic самъ (samŭ).
