Classification and phylogeny

The genus and species Pterodon dasyuroides was named in 1839.[2]

Other species assigned to Pterodon include Pterodon parisiensis,[3] Pterodon coquandi,[4] Pterodon biicisivus,[5] and Pterodon quercyi.[6] These species are all considered junior synonyms of Pterodon dasyuroides.

Taxonomy

Pterodon nyanzae is now considered to be synonymous with Hyainailouros.[7] Likewise, the putative Asian species P. dahkoensis is now assigned to its own genus, Orienspterodon.[1] "Pterodon" africanus and "Pterodon" phiomensis, both from Egypt, also need to be reevaluated.[8]
